What is wrong with our apartment garbage disposal?

Whenever I turn on the garbage disposal it is horribly loud. It sounds like something is loose and bouncing around on the blades. We don't put silverware on that side so it can't be that. I think something broke off. It also vibrates like crazy. It didn't do this before. Is there a way we can fix this ourselves from under the sink?
